Plans for 94 new homes in Stourbridge
A shabby site in Stourbridge could be transformed if planners give the go-ahead for a 94-home canalside development.
Plans have been submitted to Dudley Council for building on land south of Canal Street and off Bradley Road.
The project proposes inter-linked sites and includes land which was formerly occupied by Stourbridge Rolling Mills.
A statement on behalf of Revelan Developments which accompanies the application says: “The proposals have been carefully considered in respect of their important linking relationship with the existing and emerging redevelopment of this historic canal based industrial area, the recent developments at Stourside Hospital, the Lion Health and Leisure Centre, the approved Hope Church, and the ongoing development to the northern side of the canal at Old Wharf Road.”
The plan also includes the Linkwood site which is currently occupied by six commercial units including two used by the Fitness Factory gym.
If planners give permission the new development would feature 46 apartments in four blocks facing onto Canal Street.
The former Rolling Mills office building would have to be demolished to make way for the apartment blocks however an archeology and heritage assessment with the application says the loss of the derelict building would do only minor harm to the character of the area.
The Linkwood site would also feature four blocks housing 48 apartments along with parking and a planted ‘green buffer’ on the southern bank of the River Stour which would form part of a river flood zone.
The third site on the proposal is on land to the north of Bradley Road where developers want to construct two two-storey office buildings.
An objection to the plan has been submitted by Richard Hopkins from Stourbridge who says the development would make future development for tourism in the area impossible.
Mr Hopkins further argues the plan is not suitable for a conservation area and would cause a traffic bottleneck on Canal Street.
