Feeling happy? Llandrindod Wells is simply the best

There must be something in the water. Llandrindod Wells has been named the happiest place to live in Wales, one of several spa towns to rank in the annual 'Happy at Home' index.

The mid Wales town, built as a Victorian spa, boasts a lake, complete with a sea dragon sculpture, the National Cycle Museum, historic buildings including a country mansion and theatre.

According to estate agent Rightmove, which compiled the survey, it is also a top place in which to live.

As well as best in Wales, the town known by locals as 'Llandod', is ranked 12th in Britain.

Factors such as community spirit, feeling safe, the friendliness of locals, the amenities and local services,including green spaces and earning enough to live comfortably were taken into account.

Top spot for the UK went to Royal Leamington Spa, Harrogate, Royal Tunbridge Wells and Epsom also featuring in the top 10 list.

Dumfries was identified as the happiest place to live in Scotland.

More than 17,000 people took part in the survey, which asked them how happy they are with aspects of where they live.

Freda Davies, one of the leading lights in the National Cycle Museum, said they seemed to be a strong community spirit in the town.

"There is always something going on, it is a busy place," she said.

"It is also a very beautiful part of the country. We have visitors from all over the world and they say how much they like the area."

The town is also the home of Powys County Council.
