The fire tore through the Belgrave Hotel on the popular resort town's sea front this morning, spreading to adjoining properties.

Firefighters from across Mid Wales - including as far away as Newtown - were sent to the scene in Marine Terrace and people in the town were asked to keep doors and windows shut.

Local roads were closed after the alarm was raised just after 2.20am today.

Fire crews first on the scene were met with what they described as a "well-developed fire".

Firefighters went into the burning building and rescued nine adults and three children from the hotel.

Mid and West Wales fire service said five people were taken to hospital as a precaution.

"At present one person remains unaccounted for," fire service spokesman, Caio Higginson, said.

"The fire spread to adjoining properties and the fire service are currently working hard to prevent further fire damage.

"Residents from adjoining properties have been evacuated to alternative accommodation."

Chief Fire Officer Chris Davies said: "I’m very proud of my service. The firefighters are highly trained and ready to risk their lives to protect the community. This was a difficult incident but great work stopped it from spreading."

Roger Thomas from the fire service tweeted: "Incredible effort to prevent further damage to adjoining properties."

At the height of the blaze 12 fire appliances were at the scene, including those from Newtown. A fire service drone was also being used above the hotel.

"The cause of the fire is unknown however a joint investigation by the fire service and Dyfed Powys Police will take place in due course," Mr Higginson added.

Public Health Wales have requested that local residents keep doors and windows shut and turn off air conditioning units.

Ceredigion County Council have closed a number of roads nearby.
