Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced Powys will receive £150,000 of feasibility monies to work up new projects through the UK Government’s multi-billion pound ‘Levelling Up’ fund. The scheme will invest in local infrastructure that has a visible impact on people and their communities, such as transport schemes, regeneration projects and cultural assets.

Wales businesses are also set to receive more than £93million of investment to turbocharge green recovery and accelerate the creation of nearly 13,000 across the country. Within this, the Mid Wales Growth Deal with get an extra £1.8million per year from 2021/22 for the remaining 10 years of the Deal, which will lead to faster investment once projects are agreed, such as those focussing on transport, agriculture, skills and employment.

Support

Craig Williams MP, said: “Throughout the last year, the Treasury has unveiled unprecedented packages of support which have protected millions of jobs and supported throughout this pandemic. This Budget now allows us to look ahead with more optimism to an investment-led recovery for the whole of the UK, and especially within Wales.

“I am delighted that the packages contained will provide a huge boost to many businesses and employers who are at the heart of Montgomeryshire’s economy, and I am particularly pleased that self-employed support is being extended to include those who only became self-employed last year.

“The UK Government has supported hundreds of thousands of people and businesses in Wales throughout this pandemic, and schemes such as the multi-billion pound Levelling Up fund – which will see £150,000 allocated to Powys to work up proposals for local infrastructure investment and improvement, will be of huge benefit to many Montgomeryshire residents. This seed money is incredibly important to get new ideas off the ground and ready for larger investment. I would encourage anyone with an idea about an investment within Montgomeryshire to please let me know. I will be pushing local schemes over the coming weeks for quick and significant investment direct from UK Government.

“These measures will create real growth for Wales and Montgomeryshire, paving the way for a greener future, the creation of new highly skilled jobs, and building the infrastructure needed to dive growth in key sectors and build back better.”
