Mr John Todd from Middleton, caught a Rainbow trout weighing in at a whopping 16lb 12oz.

The fish was caught at the Clywedog Reservoir near Staylittle in Powys this week.

It beat the previous best for the 2021 season which was a trout weighing 13lb 7oz.

Fishery manager, Russ Owen, said Mr Todd caught the enormous trout from the bank using a Dawson’s Olive fly.

Llyn Clywedog Trout Fishery is run by the local Llanidloes and District Angling Association.

lThe 615 acre reservoir built on the head waters of the river Severn in the late sixties to supplement the flow on the river and also alleviate flooding in upper Severn valley.

It is now a favourite spot for anglers with miles of bank fishing and boats for its members to use.

Mr Owen said: "Clywedog is stocked weekly with a minimum of 1000 trout from out on site farm. During season we stock around 38,000 rainbow, blues brown and tiger trout."

Most of the anglers take the bigger fish home with them.

Despite the cold weather Mr Owen said there were plenty of big fish being caught.

He said the fishery was looking forward to next week.

"With all travel restrictions being lifted on April 12, Clywedog will finally be open to anglers from both sides of the border," he said.
