Campaign launched to refer to Anglesey by its Welsh name only
Welsh language enthusiasts are calling for the Isle of Anglesey to be called Ynys Môn instead.
It's the latest Welsh-only move following the recent change of Snowdonia to Eryri and the Brecon Beacons to Bannau Brycheiniog.
The Welsh Language Society pressure group is backing the call and by yesterday FRI names in favour in an online petition launched on Wednesday were approaching 800. Some backers live abroad.
Local resident Bryn Thomas is behind the petition. It is "to stop using the name Anglesey and exclusively use the name Ynys Môn or shorten to Môn.
"Some other counties in Wales don't have an Welsh and English name. Mon is easy to pronounce for all people in all languages. Two names for a county is confusing for tourists but using one name will help keep the Welsh heritage alive on the island."
