The mayor of Rhayader, Councillor Jane Narborough officially opened Rhayader’s independent foodbank this week.

A foodbank has been operating from The Arches as a branch of Llandrindod Foodbank, but during the pandemic it was clear that the town would benefit from its own independent foodbank.

This has been made possible with the financial support from The Prince’s Countryside Fund and WCVA’s Voluntary Services Recovery Fund.

Pippa Boss, chief officer of The Arches was delighted to welcome the mayor to officially open the Foodbank.

“With the support of our funders, generous donations from individuals and support from local food businesses it is great that we can run our own foodbank to meet our community’s needs," she said.

"We have also had support from Powys County Council to stock up on women’s essentials and from the Independent Food Aid Network, to set up a healthy recipe box scheme which we will launch in the new few months.

"At The Arches we can also offer additional support for people who are struggling to make ends meet – we have trained staff to offer benefits advice, we will restart our support surgeries and wellbeing groups when restrictions allow and can refer people to agencies that can help if we can’t.”

Non-perishable food donations can be made at the Spar and Co-op shops, The Arches and through local churches; and financial donations can be made at thearchesrhayader.com or at The Arches. Anyone who needs a food parcel can call in or phone 01597 810921
