Llangollen Panorama blaze an 'accident', say firefighters
A major mountain fire which saw two hectares of heather engulfed in flames was caused by "careless disposal of smoking materials", investigations have revealed.
Firefighters returned to a beauty spot yesterday morning to check over any hot spots at the Llangollen Panorama, near Trevor, after fire crews were called out at about 7.35pm on Wednesday night to tackle the large blaze.
A spokesman for the fire service said yesterday morning's investigation revealed that the cause of the fire was accidental, as a result of the "careless disposal of smoking materials" but the fire service was unable to specify what they were.
The fire service said that the blaze had engulfed 20,000 sqm of heather in the blaze, which was visible to residents for some miles.
The area is a Site of Special Scientific interest, and a popular spot for walkers and photographers.
The crews from Llangollen, Chirk, Wrexham and Buckley remained on the scene battling the fire until 10pm on Wednesday night, with the crews eventually leaving the scene at 11.20pm.
Crews were finally able to leave the scene early yesterday afternoon after establishing the cause of the fire.
