Cyclist dies on charity ride on A5
A cyclist has collapsed and died during a charity cycle ride.
The 44-year old man came off his bike on the A5 between Chirk and Llangollen today.
Other riders and passers-by stopped to try to help him and emergency services were quickly on the scene.
The Wales Air Ambulance was scrambled to help.
Temporary Superintendent Nick Evans said: “Members of the public and the emergency services tried their very best to help the cyclist and I am very sad to say that their efforts were not successful. Our thoughts are with the gentleman’s family and friends. Could I please ask that any witnesses to the incident contact the North Wales Police control room on 101 and quote V065161.”
The cyclist was taking part in the annual, Dougie Mac bike ride for the Douglas Macmillan Hospice in North Staffordshire.
More than 1,000 people took part in the event choosing either 10, 50 or 110 mile routes. The man who died was almost half way through the longest ride, from Stoke-on-Trent to Llangollen when the tragedy happened.
Cyclists passed through Whitchurch and Ellesmere throughout the day on the fundraising event.
A statement from the organisers said: "Out of respect for the bike riders family and those involved at the scene no other details are being made public by the event organisers Douglas Macmillan Hospice."
Police closed the A5 for a time.
