Paints and an easel are helping Richard with lockdown

Artist Richard Owen, only picked up a paintbrush 18 months ago.

Richard Owen from Newtown, has had great success since picking up a paint brush and easel 18 months ago and says the mindfulness needed for painting is a wonderful way to deal with the lockdown and the pandemic..

But his has already made a name for himself, selling his canvases and taking on commissions.

The 53-year-old from Newtown says the hobby has been the perfect tonic over the past year, and a wonderful way to spend lockdown.

"With such a lot of discussion at the moment about mental health and depression, I think that people who are struggling should try a new hobby," he said.

"I have always played music and always liked other people's art. Then about 18 months ago I went to an art gallery, saw some oil painting and thought, I would love to have a go at this.

"I have gone on to sell my paintings and take commissions. I like landscapes, whether Shropshire scenes or the coast."

"I find it very mindful. When you are concentration on painting your can't be worrying about things."

He said it has helped him of make the best of having to stay local.

"I find myself look at world in a different way and really appreciating nature, looking at twisted branches and trees."

Mr Owen has also started to make artwork within picture boxes.
