Mid Wales gastro pub wins to beat big boys
A Powys village pub has been crowned the best for food in Wales, beating off competition from those in towns and cities.
Staff at the Kings Head at Guilsfield, near Welshpool, are celebrating after it was named best gastro pub in the Food Award Wales event.
Licensee Sara Griffiths and husband Richard, have run the Kings Head for the past seven years and say home-cooked food and a warm welcome is the key to success.
Mr Griffiths, who grew up in Guilsfield with the Kings Head his local, said he and his wife took over the pub after it had been empty for about 18 months.
"The owner, Mr John Jones, approached us and we decided to give it a go. It's hard work but we enjoy it."
A cellar technician by trade he said it is his wife who is the chef.
"The gastro pub category is highly competitive and we are delighted to have won. We pride ourselves on our pub food that is good quality using local produce.
"Customer favourites include our homemade lasagne, curry and our very popular fish and chips made with Sara's own beer batter.
"The chips are home made as are many of our puddings including bread and butter pudding and cheesecakes."
Mr Griffiths said that with local meats and home made Yorkshire puddings and red cabbage the Sunday dinner was often fully booked.
He paid tribute to the staff at the pub, including second chef Debbie Evans and head barman, Peter Smith and the customers who support the Kings Head.
"We have very loyal regulars and also customers from all over the world who are holidaying in Mid Wales."
