Bag it and Bank it

Bag it and bank it is the message from Welshpool firefighters.

Rather than the usual fire safety message the crews from the town's fire station are urging people to have a spring clean out and take their unwanted textiles along to the special yellow container outside the headquarters in Severn Road.

Fire stations across the UK are involved in the Bag it and Bank it campaign during January.

Billy Barrett from Welshpool said: "This year is the 75th birthday of the firefighters charity. To mark this anniversary Welshpool Firefighters are promoting this years #bagitandbankit campaign, and with your help we’re hoping to raise as much money as possible from textile recycling from our station's clothes bank in 2018."

Proceeds from the sale of the textiles goes to the firefighters' charity which supports over 5000 people a year, serving and retired firefighters and their families.

"It supports a wide range of services including rehabilitation, health and well-being, nursing and mental health.

"The charity's advice, information and support service supports individuals in the community covering areas such as social care, advocacy, financial support, home adaptions, equipment provision and bereavement support.

"It handles cases on a national basis and is close to the hearts of Welshpool Station. For each tonne of textiles that are donated to a bank on a fire station we receive on average £220 to help firefighters in need.

"Bag it and bank it is in full swing but we still want more old clothes, shoes and bags. Bag them up and donate them to Welshpool fire station's yellow clothes bank which is positioned at the front of the fire station."
