New Welshpool super school on track
Work on a new super school in Welshpool is progressing well, with new pictures showing the structures going up.
The school, on Salop Road fields, will be an English medium one and will be able to educate 360 pupils, with one Welsh medium primary school on a separate site in the town.
The progress is continuing on the site, and is set to be finished in the summer.
County councillor Graham Breeze said it will be better to see children learning in purpose built buildings, rather than being packed into out of date classrooms.
He said: "It is brilliant to see so much progress taking place at the site and the developers seem well on target for the opening, scheduled for when pupils return from their summer holidays this year.
"The new facility will centralise English speaking education for up to 360 pupils at one location as opposed to the current offering of ageing schools.
"In September children will benefit from a completely new and modern facility, offering the best possible educational opportunities.
"For far too long the children of Welshpool have been packed into out-of-date buildings where staff are producing miracles working in very difficult conditions. In some cases this involves leaking roofs and breaking boilers.
"Delayed plans for the new Welsh speaking school on the Ysgol Maesydre site are also now starting to take shape and are currently out for consultation meaning the best possible education for all the children of Welshpool."
The company involved in providing the insulation for the new Welshpool school is PYC Construction on the Buttington Enterprise Park – just over the hedge from the construction site.
It is making insulation out of old newspapers, which have been collected through a project with pupils in the area.
