Welshpool Town Council delays projects to prevent big tax rise

Welshpool Town Council is to delay several projects to prevent a large increase in its portion of council tax.

There had been fears that householders who have to pay £40 extra next year, a 26 per cent rise.

But at its budget meeting on Wednesday councillors decided to reduce the rise to eight per cent.

It means band D tax payers will see an increase from £162 to £176.

The council agreed to delay the relocation of the CCTV cameras, saving £9,000, delay the new playground climbing frame, saving£14,000, and the outdoor gym, saving £5,000, reduced the expenditure on the events programme, saving £3,500, and delaying the street planting scheme.

The council says it has the largest budget and responsibilities in Powys.

It runs the Town Hall, Welshpool Day Centre, the Tourist Information Centre and public toilets and the town's meals-on-wheels service. It is also responsible for the indoor and outdoor markets, recreation groups, playgrounds, a country park, the memorial gardens and other areas of the town.
