Elderly Malpas woman died following medical procedure complications
An elderly woman died following complications after a medical procedure, an inquest heard.
Ida Heather Probin was admitted to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital on October 12.
The 85-year-old from Malpas, was "extremely unwell" suffering with an appendix mass with disseminated intra-abdominal malignancy and an obstruction of the bilary, Michael Caesar-Homden, coroner 's officer, said at the inquest on Wednesday.
Mr Caesar-Homden said: "A decision was made to conduct an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) which was an essential decision to treat the obstruction as she would have passed away.
"On October 16 she underwent the procedure but shortly afterwards she complained of abdominal pain and her condition continued to deteriorate.
"Had he not have conducted the ERCP she would most likely have passed away and she and her husband were aware it could cause pancreatitis."
Mrs Probin died at the hospital on October 18.
Mr Caesar-Homden said the cause of Mrs Probin's death was pancreatitis, due to endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and an appendix mass with disseminated intra-abdominal malignancy.
John Ellery, coroner for Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, recorded a conclusion that Mrs Probin died from a complication of "necessary but appropriate surgery".
