Bid to bring back village railway station
A village railway station should be reinstated to ease the growing problem of congestion on the roads of north Shropshire, a petition says.
The petition to Shropshire Council and the Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps, calls for Baschurch station, on the Shrewsbury to Chester line, to re-pen.
Petitions say the village is growing, local roads are busier and public transport must be improved to prevent more climate changes.
It was launched by Robert Jones, a Liberal Democrat candidate in the May Shropshire Council elections.
He says there should be a new feasibility study on the station’s reopening along with the reinstatement of regular passenger train services.
The last study into pressing Baschurch back into use as a station was carried out 14 years ago and Mr Jones said since then there had been hundreds of new homes built in the area.
“A new railway station in Baschurch could bring tremendous benefit to everyone in the area by reducing traffic locally and to the north of Shrewsbury, reducing pollution, creating economic opportunities by connecting residents with jobs, facilities and local services in Shrewsbury and further afield, and not to mention helping to fight climate change.”
The petition can be found online at northshropshirelibdems.org.uk/transport/sign-petition-to-reopen-baschurch-station
It reads: “Recognising the rapid development and growth of Baschurch and villages in the surrounding area over the last 14 years; the lack of investment in or improvement to local transport infrastructure; we the undersigned call for Baschurch Railway Station to be reopened and for the reinstatement of regular passenger train services.”
