Market Drayton market hailed one of Shropshire's best
A town's street market has been hailed as one of Shropshire's best as it commemorated a national campaign.
LSD Promotions, which runs the market every Wednesday in Market Drayton, said the event is well supported and has a good mix of traders.
It comes as the market celebrated the Love Your Local Market campaign on Wednesday.
The campaign started in 2012 following recommendations made in the Mary Portas Review.
The recommendations called for a National Market Day, which soon developed into Love Your Local Market Fortnight, which now takes place annually in May.
From an initial take up of 400 markets, successive campaigns have developed into an international movement spanning 16 countries, with over 1,100 markets participating in the UK alone in 2016.
The main purpose of Love Your Local Market is to raise the profile of markets across the UK, encourage start-up businesses and increase young people’s involvement in markets.
LSD Promotions chose Wednesday for the event to be commemorated at Market Drayton's street and indoor market.
Both markets were decorated in the campaign colours as the marketplace received visits from musicians, living statues, birds of prey rescue centre and a host of colourful characters that included the famous Midlands market mascot Bananaman who loves to give away free bananas.
Traders also joined in the campaign by offering extra discounts and deals to customers.
Dermot McGillicuddy, from LSD Promotions, said: "The market is going well. It is a nice street market – it is probably one of Shropshire's best street markets.
"I love Market Drayton. Its market is great and its small indoor market is good too.
"It is a great thing for Market Drayton. It helps make a Wednesday become the town's busiest day.
"We have a really nice mix of traders, from butchers to fruit and veg and fish. We also have some unusual stuff on there. One lady does Lego art.
"We get great support from both the town council and Shropshire Council. The event is important to both groups."
Mr McGillicuddy added: "The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of markets and raise their profile.
"Any business wanting to start up, we can give them the opportunity."
