Now the annual car show held near Market Drayton has been renamed in memory of its former organiser who died last year.

The Wharf Classic Car Show will now be known as the Simon Beresford Car Festival.

Sadly Mr Beresford, 58, of Market Drayton, died after being diagnosed with sarcoma, a cancerous tumour.

He was was the founder of the event which has grown in popularity over the last 22 years

His family have now vowed to keep the show going in his memory.

This year's event is due to be held at the Wharf Tavern in Goldstone, near Market Drayton, at 6.30pm today.

His wife Helen said: "We wanted to pay a special tribute to Simon who loved the event.

"On a good day we can get 500 cars. We get all sorts, from Austin-Healey's to Jaguars.

"Its a brilliant event. Everyone meets up, has a chat and looks at the other cars."

The event is free but collection buckets will be available to raise money for Severn Hospice.

Last year's event was hailed a success despite it being an emotional occasion for the family.

"There were about 450 cars there which was amazing. Everyone came along and parked up and seemed to thoroughly enjoy it," Helen said.

"We had to use two overflow car parks and expanded into another field – it was just brilliant.

“We had several cars worth more than £1 million including Ferrari’s which was fantastic. However it was more about the love of cars rather than the most expensive.

“It was a very emotional evening but also very good. There was a lot of support."
