Suggestions made to improve safety on Market Drayton road
Removing a pedestrian crossing and reducing the speed limit are just some of the suggestions to make a stretch of road in a town centre safer.
Residents in Market Drayton have been having their say on what action should be carried out to reduce traffic issues on Frogmore Road.
It comes after Market Drayton Town Council agreed to write to Shropshire Council to ask for the parking spaces outside the Festival Drayton Centre to be removed on the road.
Fears have been raised the spaces are proving to be a hazard as cars try to avoid vehicles parked there.
Commenting on the Drayton Crier Facebook page, Shannah Henderson said: "I can’t see the problem with the parking spaces. The problem down there is the idiot drivers that speed down there or pull out on people and not taking notice when people are waiting to cross. So taking the parking spaces away isn't going to stop that happening."
Shirley Wright said: "Zebra crossing needs removing. It's been put too close to the exit of the car park."
Jason Lowe said: "It's the crossing that needs going. We already have a fully functional set of pedestrian lights just up the road. The car parking spaces don't bother me."
Ian Hayward commented: "Everything about that stretch of road is wrong.
"Why park cars on a main road when there is a car park 10 yards away and two crossings for pedestrians to cross the road?"
Kristina Coulthread added: "I drive through that way daily and I have never had an accident or a near miss and I also park there often if nipping to a local shop.
"I think the issues are the lunatic drivers, not the parking spaces, and I am sure they are just looking for something to moan about. The near accidents are mainly caused to people not looking."
At a recent meeting of the town council, Roger Hughes, Shropshire councillor for Market Drayton, proposed that the spaces by the centre are replaced with double yellow lines.
He said: "We need to put double yellow lines in instead of the spaces to stop everyone parking there.
"It needs a total ban on parking there."
Councillors also said they are writing to Shropshire Council to ask for the pedestrian crossings in the town to be re-painted and the beacon lights replaced because drivers cannot see them clearly in the dark.
