The A525 is currently shut for five weeks, between 9.30am and 4pm, from the junction with the A51 at Woore, near Market Drayton, towards Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Constable Mick Sturland, of the Market Drayton safer neighbourhood team, said they had received several calls about drivers ignoring the road closure signs.

He said: "We have also received several calls about motorists ignoring the closed road signs which are out on the A525 Woore to Madeley road.

"Roadworks are in place for several weeks and closures and diversions in place.

"Highways staff are also on hand, yet it seems that these closures don't apply to some.

"Reports of abuse have been made and threats to the highways staff.

"We will deal robustly with anyone reported ignoring the closed road signs and especially abuse towards highways staff who are doing their jobs."

The section was closed to traffic from June 12, and works are estimated to take five weeks to complete.

Shropshire Council officials said work would not be undertaken at weekends.
