Drawing of country house near Market Drayton makes competition shortlist
It is an impressive Grade II listed country house which was built for the Mackworth family in the 18th century and was later used as a Bomber Command centre in the Second World War.
Now Buntingsdale Hall near Market Drayton is the subject of an architectural drawing that is on a shortlist in a competition run by the Georgian Group.
The drawing has been produced by Edmund Browne, draftsman and architectural assistant at Craig Hamilton Architects.
The hall had been built for the Mackworth family between 1719 and 1721, though they sold it in 1797. During the Second World War it was requisitioned as a Bomber Command control centre. The RAF kept the building during the Cold War until 1981 when the house was sold to developers who divided it into flats.
The building nfell into a serious state of disrepair, with no water, gas or electricity. All the floorboards and mantelpieces had been stripped out and water was pouring in through the ceilings.
It was later bought by Richard Mackworth, a descendant of the original owners, and he and his wife Rosalind set about buying back the flats piecemeal. In due course they succeeded in reclaiming the whole house, to which they moved, on a semi-permanent basis, in 1985.
Following a restoration, the house was removed from the Historic Buildings at Risk register in 2004.
Five shortlisted entries have been announced for the Georgian Group’s International Architectural Measured Drawing Prize.
Open to artists and architects under 40, the competition sought hand-drawn elevations, plans or sections showing the interior or exterior of Georgian-style buildings completed between 1660 and 1840, anywhere in the world.
Other buildings on the shortlist include a school at Winchester College, St George’s in Bloomsbury, Ralph Allen’s Townhouse in Bath and Russborough House in Wicklow.
The overall winner will be announced at the 2017 Georgian Group Awards on November 30.
