Firefighters were called at 7.40am on Tuesday after the false alarm at Woodcroft. Crews attended from the town and nearby Hodnet.

Sally Eynon of the Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said that insects could crawl inside fire detectors and set them off by making contact with the detector head.

She said: "It does happen from time to time, it is usually thunderflies and spiders making contact with the mechanism.

"We say it is a good reason to hoover out your detector head every so often."
