Carers at the Cuan Wildlife Rescue Centre said the red kite was found concussed and brought to the centre, which cares for all manner of creatures and gets them in shape to return to the wild.

The animal was found last weekend and is now being cared for at the centre near Much Wenlock.

Fran Hill, manager of the wildlife centre, said: “I love every creature but these have to be my absolute favourite.

“We don’t have them in often but as kites are moving deeper into Shropshire, I’m sure we will start to see more of them.

“This one was picked up off a road between Market Drayton and Shrewsbury, clearly concussed on arrival at the weekend, but after plenty of loving care from the team he looked stunning as I arrived back at work.”

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds said that the red kite was saved from natural extinction by a far-reaching protection programme and has been successfully re-introduced to England and Scotland.

They are known for their distinctive reddish-brown bodies, angled wings and deeply forked tails.
