Plea from fire crews after farmer sets tree alight
Fire crews have warned the public to alert authorities before controlled burns, after a farmer set fire to a tree.
Firefighters were called to a hollow tree that had been set alight at Winnington, near Market Drayton, on Wednesday evening.
After inquiring they learned that a farmer had started the fire inside the tree in the middle of his field. They were satisfied that there was no danger of the fire spreading, and let it burn out overnight.
A spokesman for the fire service said: "If you are planning on having a controlled burn of any description, please ensure you notify our fire control on 01743 260290 prior to carrying it out.
"This helps to prevent appliances being mobilised unnecessarily."
