The lifesize scrap soldier, made of spare iron and farm equipment, appeared in the grounds of St Leonard's Church in Woore.

And villagers have taken to it, adding poppies to its frame ahead of the centenary of the First World War.

Graham Sedgley, who lives in nearby Mucklestone, noticed the sculpture as he drove through the area.

He said: "I'm not quite sure how it got there but I think it's quite poignant and very appropriate.

"You can tell from the state of it it's quite old, and I spoke to someone who said they had seen it before about 10 years ago.

"People who are driving along can see it from the road and come in to have a look."

The metal man has been lodged in place with his feet planted in the ground.
