Just days left to Market Drayton poll deadline
One town’s election season is about to start as the deadline for council nominations approaches.
Anyone interested in becoming a member of Market Drayton Town Council must return their forms this week.
The election was triggered when enough registered voters appealed after ex-councillor Rebekah Gould resigned her seat before Christmas.
Nomination forms can be collected from the town hall on Frogmore Road or the Shirehall in Shrewsbury, and should be submitted by 4pm this Friday.
Polls in the town's north ward will open on February 21 if there is more than one candidate.
Another town councillor, John Cadwallader, announced his own resignation at a meeting last week. That may lead to another election or co-option in the near future.
Among the candidates for the upcoming election for the north ward is Mike Smith, who organises events in the town and moderates a popular social media page for townspeople.
Mr Smith said he wants to encourage more shopping in the town centre.
He floated the possibility of installing more parking in the High Street and bringing car parks under town council control.
He said: "More support for local shops and traders with the formation of a group all traders would be encouraged to join, which would allow them to speak as one voice on important matters.
"Continue the improvements to communications broadband and services offered to residents and business in the town.
"Improved CCTV and security systems, providing more great entertainment and recreation facilities for the town, expanding on the already great events we have in town.
"Coming from a tech background I feel I’m in a good position to help make a lot of these things become reality.
"Join me and let's make Market Drayton great once more."

Town councillor Roy Aldcroft said the election process would cost the council £2,000.
He said: "New faces, new ideas and fresh views are always welcome. It will be interesting to see who applies and who is standing."
