Getting off the beaten track in a 4x4

Visitors to a Shropshire beauty spot will soon be able to get an up-close look at woodlands with a 4x4 experience weekend.

The Hawkstone Park Follies near Market Drayton will host the weekend on March 16 and 17, giving 4x4 fans an opportunity to be taken down special off-road tracks.

Ash 4x4 holds sessions of all kinds at the Follies year-round, but for this weekend only passengers will have access to the exclusive woodland 4x4 tracks.

The woodland is only for experienced instructors to drive in, but the regular sessions offer a chance for visitors to drive the vehicles themselves through much of the scenic Follies.

Billy Hilton from Ash 4x4 said: "We've got a 4x4 course on site. We do driver training there as well but predominantly it's for a fun hour.

"The instructors tell you a little bit about the vehicles there and what the course is like and then you get to drive it.

"A lot of people think it is all about speed but it's not, it's about being slow and steady.

"We're putting 4x4s back in their natural environment."

Visitors to the Follies can pay £10 to add a 4x4 taster session onto their day, while a return trip with no entry fee to the Follies required will cost £20.
