Government minister agrees to meeting about north Shropshire village
A government minister has agreed that safety measures must be brought in Woore before construction work begins on the nearby HS2 rail line.
North Shropshire MP, Owen Paterson, spoke via video link in a debate in the House of Commons this week.
He urged transport minister, Andrew Stephenson to ensure all 33 mitigation measures agreed by HS2 for Woore were pushed through.
"I am seriously concerned for the safety of my constituents. The measures must be implemented before those 300 trucks a day start pounding down the narrow lane and past the footpath that crosses the A51 three times. We need more than a pelican crossing," he said.
"There are 65 children that will be trying to get to school every day."
"The road is already inadequate for modern traffic, yet perversely, HS2 has decided to go on three sides of a rectangle to take, at the peak, 300 heavy goods vehicles per day—a total of 130,000 extra heavy goods vehicle movements over seven years."
Mr Stephenson said he was happy to commit to meeting Mr Paterson to discuss the challenges for the village of Woore and the impact on the parish.
