The alarm was raised at Palethorpes Pork Farms on Maer Lane in Market Drayton at about 11.30pm yesterday.

The fire broke out in a cardboard storage unit and is not thought to have been suspicious, although investigation officers are looking into the cause.

Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service sent six appliances including the aerial ladder platform, incident command unit, incident support unit and the welfare unit.

Crews were sent from Hodnet, Market Drayton, Shrewsbury and Telford Central fire stations and were still at the scene at 6am.

Firefighters used four sets of breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets, a covering jet and the aerial ladder platform to extinguish the fire.

Police were called to the scene, as well as West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS), which was later stood down.

A WMAS spokeswoman said: "We were called by the police at 00.46am to a fire at Maer Lane Industrial Estate in Market Drayton. We sent a paramedic officer to the scene. The officer assisted fire colleagues, but once it was confirmed there were no patients, we were stood down from the scene.”

Operations, fire investigation and safety officers were in attendance and further checks were being conducted to ensure there was no risk of the blaze re-igniting.
