Witness appeal on Mauritius after Shropshire couple killed in taxi crash
Witnesses are being sought on the holiday island of Mauritius after a crash which killed a Shropshire couple.
Hugh Vaughan and his wife Liz, who lived in Prees Heath, near Whitchurch, were travelling in a taxi when the collision happened on May 1.
The taxi driver, who is 44 years old and lives in Pamplemousses on the island, has been released on "parole" according to the Mauritius media.
He is expected to appear in court tomorrow.
A statement on behalf of the Commissioner of Police in Mauritius said: "A police inquiry is under way into the case of a fatal road accident which occurred on May 1 at 3pm along New Trunk Road, Notre Dame, Long Montagne.
"A taxi car, which was coming from the south of the island, proceeded towards the north when it skidded and overturned. Its two passengers – British nationals – were killed.
"The driver of the taxi car was arrested and a provisional charge of involuntary homicide was lodged against him. Witnesses are being interviewed to shed light on the case."
Mr Vaughan was the UK director of Landia, which supplies machinery to farmers across the UK from its base in Whitchurch.
In a statement the company said he would be “sorely missed” by friends and colleagues. Mr Vaughan was also a member of Hawkstone Park Golf Club near Wem.
