Wem Town Council satisfied with height of new housing for the elderly
A town council says it is satisfied with the height of new housing being built for the elderly – despite concerns being made by residents.
Wem Town Council said it has no concerns with the size of the new apartment block being built off Station Road.
It comes despite residents living nearby claiming the new apartment block is “out of proportion” with the local area.
The issue was discussed at the latest meeting of the town council.
Penny O'Hagan, town council clerk, said: "We did receive concerns about the height of the building. But after speaking with the housing provider we are satisfied with the building.
"We have been told the roof has been designed to enable residents to walk under and not get wet in the winter.
"We are happy with that and the people who raised concerns seem happy with that as well."
The apartment block is being built as part of a scheme to create new housing for the elderly on the site of the former Westlands Care Home.
Meres and Mosses Housing Association was granted planning permission last year to pull down the care home and build 32 new homes in its place.
Shropshire Council said it is “satisfied” that the development is being carried out in accordance with the approved planning application.
Peggy Carson, of Station Road in Wem, previously said: “I am very concerned about the height of the apartment block. It is out of proportion with other houses in the area and is dwarfing the other houses around it.
“It is meant to be a two-storey block, but the height of the roof makes it look more like a four-storey block.”
