Man arrested over 'threats to kill' after armed police called to Wem High Street incident

A 23-year-old man from Wem has been arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill after armed police were called to Wem High Street .

Officers were called out concerns were raised about the man's safety.

Police arrived at the scene at about 8pm yesterday and had to negotiate with the man, who was later take to hospital and arrested.

Kieren Bodill, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: "Police were called at approximately 7.58pm last night to report following the concerns for the welfare of a man at a property on high street in Wem.

"Following reports of a weapon, armed police attended the scene as a precautionary matter.

"The incident was contained to the property and no one else was involved, there is no wider risk to the public.

"Negotiators were present at the scene, at around 12.40am, they managed to calm him down and he was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and later arrested.

"A 23-year-old man from Wem was arrested on suspicion of threats to kill, and currently remains in police custody."
