Wem gas works progressing well – says firm
Gas works affecting a major route into a town are progressing well and are on course to finish within six weeks, the firm behind the scheme has revealed.
Wales & West Utilities has confirmed it is set to finish replacing the old gas pipes in Station Road and Aston Street, Wem, by October 30.
A one-way system has been in place since work started on September 18, which has sparked concerns elderly people in the town are being left isolated.
Wales & West Utilities operations controller for north Wales, Paul Astley, said: "We are currently working on Aston Street and Station Road in Wem to upgrade more than 400 metres of old metal gas pipes in the area to new plastic ones.
"This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses – and make sure the gas network is fit for the future.
"In agreement with Shropshire Council, and so that road users, pedestrians and our colleagues are kept safe while we work, a partial road closure, as well as a one-way system, is in use.
"During this work, all traffic still has access to and from the town along the signposted diversion routes. This includes buses.
"We are working as safely and as quickly as we can to complete this essential work and, barring any unforeseen circumstances, we still expect to complete our work as planned on October 30.
"We know working on roads like these is not ideal, but it really is essential to keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area."
