Plans unveiled for new caravan site in Wem
A caravan site could be built on the outskirts of a town, new plans have revealed.
A proposal has been submitted to Shropshire Council to create 10 touring caravan pitches and toilet/shower/laundry/office block on land near The Chapel, Pool Head, Wem.
The scheme would involve converting agricultural land to provide the caravan site.
The application has been submitted by land owners Dominic and Sue Hughes who are described as "caravan holiday enthusiasts".
Documents submitted in support of the application state: "The Primitive Chapel and adjacent land is owned and managed by Dominic and Sue Hughes; the applicants small holding it is a modest property amounting to circa three acres, the subject land is pasture land and is currently used to graze sheep or the neighbouring farmer harvests hay from it.
"The applicants are caravan holiday enthusiasts have a great understanding of the industry and good management of sites, subsequently they wish to make better use of the land by creating a select touring caravan site.
"Ahead of submitting this application, the applicants have undertaken extensive research into the Tranquil Group, a select group of caravan sites catering for adults only. As a result of their investigations, the applicants believe there proposal is something which would be welcomed in the area and would support local businesses.
"Pool Head is located near to the England/ Wales border and is close to a number of key tourism facilities such Whixall Meres and Mosses, Colemere Country Park and Llangollen Canal.
"There are a range of facilities and opportunities close to site which would appeal to tourists looking for walking and cycling holidays as well dining out at restaurants and local pubs.
"The provision of up to 10 touring caravan pitches with the associated building, to be used in association with the Tranquil Group, will provide a different take on a popular holiday activity within the area.
"Tourism opportunities of this nature encourages visitors to Shropshire."
The documents add there would be sufficient space for at least one car to park adjacent to each caravan plus some amenity space afforded to the individual plots.
Wem Rural Parish Council is due to discuss the plans at its next meeting at 7pm on Tuesday in Edinburgh House, Wem.
Shropshire Council hopes to make a final decision on the scheme by December 8.
