Whitchurch Town Council will wait on the results of the study before work can start on the new facility in Jubilee Park.

Earlier this year funding had been put in place to build the long-awaited skate park after a decade of campaigning.

Nicola Young, town council clerk, said: "Part of the site allocated for the skate park is on the old gas works. Therefore, in order to make sure the site is not contaminated and avoid building stoppages should anything untoward be found, it has been agreed to take up the services of an environmental engineering company, RSK Environment Services Ltd.

"RSK have already carried out a desk-based site investigation and quantitative risk assessment and, in order to mitigate against any unforeseen problems they have now been instructed to carry out land investigations on site. We await their report.

"Shropshire Council and Whitchurch Town Council are organising a date with the contractor who will be carrying out the on-site investigations, once this work has been carried out and the results understood, the skate park work will be organised as quick as possible.

"Both Shropshire Council and Whitchurch Town Council are keen to get this work moving so that the young people of the town can have this long-awaited facility."

The park, which will cost in the region of £70,000, is expected to take about eight weeks to build.
