Weston Rhyn Parish Council met to give their response to Marston’s application to build next to the Poachers pub and restaurant in Chirk Bank, near Oswestry.

Chairman Ralph Cooper said while they had no objection to the planning application in principle, there were a number of caveats councillors would like to see enforced.

The plans are part of Marston’s nationwide development programme to provide overnight accommodation on selected sites across its estate.

The company says it could create up to 10 new full-time and part-time jobs for housekeeping and reception duties.

Councillor Cooper said members hope the roles would be given to local people.

“We support the hotel but there is one or two concerns that we will be passing on to the planners,” he added.

“The development will be in the World Heritage Site buffer zone,

“Shropshire Council should therefore consider the effect of this development on the site very carefully to ensure there is no negative impact at present – with it being seen as a potential eyesore, which is totally out of keeping with the surrounding area.

“There is also a need for surface water issues to be addressed because the area in question is very wet at times and prone to flooding.”

Members also noted that Shropshire Council’s SAMDev housing and development plan states the land is open countryside should not be build on unless there is “exceptional reasons”.

The plans include 30 extra car parking spaces and alterations to the existing beer garden and play area.

Breakfast would be served for hotel guests in the Poachers before the restaurant opens to the public at noon.

The Canal and River Trust has also raised their concerns over the impact the development would have on the canal, which is just metres away.

Anne Denby said any potential planning could compromise the structural integrity of the waterway.

Shropshire Council is expected to make a decision on the proposal in September.
