Memorial service for being held well-known Oswestry couple

A memorial service for a Shropshire journalist and his wife will be held next week.

The lives of Mike and Lesley Robinson will be remembered at Oswestry Cricket Club on Wednesday at 2pm.

Mr Robinson, who was also chairman of the cricket club, passed away on September 8 after a short battle with illness. His wife Lesley, a retired learning support teaching assistant, died a day earlier.

Hundreds are expected to attend the service to pay tribute to the pair who were well-known in Oswestry and Shrewsbury.

Mr Robinson joined the Shrewsbury Chronicle in 1988 and spent 21 years as editor of newspapers in Shropshire including the South Shropshire Journal, Mid Wales Journal, Hereford Journal and Ludlow Journal.

In recent times, he returned to North Wales Newspapers, where he started his career, working on the Border Counties Advertizer and the Whitchurch Herald.

He was known to many across the county as a journalist,but sport was Mr Robinson's biggest passion.

The 65-year-old was a leading member of Oswestry Cricket Club for around 40 years, edited Shrewsbury Town’s matchday programme, was an avid horse racing follower and was a founder committee member of the Wem Sunday Football League.

Oswestry cricketers have vowed to win the Birmingham & District Premier Cricket League Division Two for Mr Robinson who has been hailed a 'club legend'.

The couple leave behind two sons Mark and Paul. All are welcome to attend. Dress is formal attire.

Donations will be for three charities, Oswestry Cricket Club Junior Section, Safe Standing Campaign at Shrewsbury Town Football Club and Child Autism UK.
