Probe into fire at bungalow near Oswestry continues into weekend

Investigations are continuing into the weekend to discover how a severe fire began at a bungalow near Oswestry.

Roads around the property in the Sychtyn area near Trefonen happened at around 3.15pm on Thursday, with a host of of fire crews from around the county and over the border in Powys being called in.

Six teams attended and some of the roof on the bungalow collapsed, as well as the chimney, although no details on the exact extent of the damage were yet available.

Fire crews were battling to get the blaze under control into Thursday evening, with a crew truck getting stuck on a narrow lane leading to the property.

A water carried was sent to the incident from Bridgnorth, and a spokesperson for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was severe.

Crews were sent from Oswestry Fire Station at around 3.15pm, with efforts to get the blaze under control still ongoing into the evening.

She said: “We were called at 3.15pm to reports of a house fire.

“The severe fire involved a residential bungalow.

“As well as crews sent by Shropshire Fire and Rescue, we worked with other crews from across the border in Wales.”

It is believed the bungalow was unoccupied at the time and no one was injured in the blaze.

It is the fourth big fire within a half a mile radus of the area in eight years.

One of those fires happened in 2014, when a fire ripped through an isolated property at Wern Ddu, near to the current incident.

It took hours for the crews to tackle the blaze in November 2014, with firefighters still dampening the fire 15 hours after it began.
