Cheese spread: A5 near Oswestry closed as lorry overturns
The A5 near Oswestry was closed this morning after a lorry overturned, shedding its load of cheese and spilling 80 gallons of diesel onto the road.
Traffic was slow on the road, which is between the A483 and B5070, after the 42-tonne lorry overturned last night on the Gledrid roundabout.
Delays were estimated to be up to 20 minutes and increasing on the A5 westbound between B5070 and A483.
The cheese has been removed and officers are on the scene arranging the recovery of the lorry and possible road repairs.
A fire crew from Oswestry was sent to the scene at 9.30pm yesterday after the lorry overturned, to deal with fuel spillage.
A spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "The fire crew used environmental packs and small gear to deal with the fuel spillage.
"We left the site at 11.22pm."
The driver was assessed by the ambulance service.
Claire Brown, spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said the driver was assessed but he had only suffered minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.
She said: "We were called by the police just after 9.30pm to Gledrid roundabout on the A5 to reports of a lorry which had overturned believed to be carrying cheese.
"The driver managed to self-extricate from the cab.
Minor injuries
"One ambulance attended and assessed the patient who had suffered minor injuries and didn't require any hospital treatment."
Laura Maltby, spokeswoman for West Mercia Police, said: "Police were called to the A5 in Gobowen shortly before 9.30pm yesterday following a report a lorry had overturned and spilled its load on the Glendrid roundabout.
"The fire service also attended the scene.
"Highways are aware but at this time it is not clear when the road will be reopened."
