Swanning about on the moat

Villagers have welcomed the return of a pair of swans to their castle moat.

Swans feed in the shadow of Whittington Castle

Whittington has seen swans at the historic castle for as long as anyone can remember.

But following the death the latest pair, Bill and Betty, four years ago the water seems to have been unable to attract any swans.

Now two young swans have appeared to the delight of castle manager, Sue Ellis.

"We had seen them flying in for a few hours now and again but they never stayed. Then, on Good Friday I watched them fly in and land on the water - and they have been here every since.

"We are just keeping our fingers crossed that they stay. They certainly seem to be enjoying being fed by our visitors.

"It may be too late now to have cygnets this year but hopefully we will have a resident pair of swans."

Whittington's other new arrival, a duck hatched by children at Gobowen School, has also settled down.

"Mr Pink, as the children named him, is very happy and certainly seems to have made new friends."
