James Corfield was 19 when he died.

The community of Montgomery has since rallied together and this week two cricket matches took place in his memory.

James was a talented all-round cricketer who won many accolades during his career, and on Sunday as part of the club’s president’s day, a Montgomery side took on a Shropshire Select XI made up of players from Oswestry.

The match takes place every year, but this year came almost a year since James died. The day included children’s activities, a barbecue, and the game, which saw the Shropshire XI come out on top.

James was a keen egg farmer, and a chicken trophy was presented for two players’ fielding abilities as a light-hearted way of remembering the teenager.

Some of James’s family members were there, including his brother Thomas who played for Montgomery.

Club chairman John Barker thanked the people who attended and said it was a fitting way to remember James.

He said: “It was a fantastic occasion and a fitting way to remember James as the standard of cricket on show throughout the day, be it the seniors or the junior teams, of which James was a key figure in both, was incredibly high.

“I would like to thank everyone who came to support us and help make the day so special, especially the lads from Shropshire who gave up their Sundays despite having already played for their respective clubs on a Saturday.

“They were not only very good cricketers but a lovely group of people.”

James was a pupil in Welshpool and on Tuesday the very first James Corfield Cup was played out by Welshpool and Newtown High Schools.
