Fireworks boost for Oswestry clubs

From mums and toddlers to senior citizens, organisations for all ages and from all walks of life have benefitted from Oswestry's annual bonfire and fireworks evening.

Almost £5,000 was handed out recently to 16 groups who had applied for funding from the a fund set up by the town council and the Borderland Rotary Club of Oswestry.

Each year they organise the popular, Oswestry Bonfire and Fireworks evening, which was founded local firefigthers under theTreble Niners banner.

Each year the income from the popular community event to available to support local clubs, organisations and other local events.

Oswestry Town Council donates the costs of firework purchase each year and this is added to the profits from the event.

Over the last 30 years of the event in excess of £80,000 has been distributed to local good causes.

One of the new initiatives helped this year was the Nipper and Rippers cycling event in Cae Glas Park.

More than 50 children were able to experience riding their bikes at dusk to give them confidence in a safe environment. Their goody bags included new lights for their bikes.

Organiser Alan Lewis, who is also responsible for the annual Oswestry midnight ride said he was very grateful for the £250 grant.
