New third generation playing surfaces, goals, line markings, fencing and equipment, are just some of what's being carried out on Chirk Leisure and Activity Centre to enable the centre to host a wide range of sports including football matches and training, futsal and hockey.

The £300,000 investment comes from Freedom Leisure, the firm who are running the centre on behalf of Wrexham Council.

Sarah Roberts, duty manager at the centre, said the addition of a 3G pitch is a "major coup" for the community.

She said: "The 3G pitch is an exciting addition to what we have here, we're already starting to take bookings with local teams and we have an open night of training planned with Chirk Youth FC when the work is complete.

"We're really trying to encourage local club use and are trying to give football a big push in the community, particularly amongst young people.

"We're going to have this fantastic new pitch, so there really isn't a better time to get involved in local football."

Once work is completed on the pitches, the centre's fitness suite will be refurbished.

Sarah added: "It's onwards and upwards here in Chirk. Things are looking fantastic and we're delighted that Freedom Leisure came good with their promise about the 3G pitches and upgrades."

The pitches are set to be open to local teams and the public on March 18.
