The front of a silver Ford Focus was submerged in the canal along the stretch of road at Aqueduct Cottages in Chirk Bank.

The lane runs directly next to the canal and tyre marks could be seen in the grass next to the water.

Police and recovery experts were at the scene early on Sunday morning, with the car believed to have ended up in the water at around 3am.

It was removed with a crane amid reports that it had been abandoned after going in to the canal.

Fiona James, who lives along the stretch and runs the Paws and Tails doggy day care business, said they thought it had happened between 3am and 4am, but they had only realised in the morning when they saw police on the scene.

She said: "I think what has happened is he has gone past a house, realised he cannot get any further and it looked like there were three attempts to reverse and its ended up the canal."

That stretch of canal has a private single track lane people can use to access the homes.

West Mercia Police confirmed they had been called to the scene at 8.45am and had helped arrange the recovery of the car.
