The specially wooden bench features carving of the town's landmarks including Chirk Castle and the aqueduct and viaduct.

It was put in place in front of the Millennium Garden opposite the Cenotaph by Chirk Town Council.

The bench and a plaque with the rainbow that became a symbol of the fight against the pandemic were both commissioned by the council and made by local sculptor Jim Heath.

The inscription on the bench reads: “This is to commemorate and thank all the residents and businesses in Chirk for their significant efforts in the 2021/2021 Covid-19 Pandemic. Exemplary community spirit conquered the challenges that beset the town."

It was the idea of Councillor Dorothy Griffiths.

Chairman of Chirk Town Council, Councillor Brian Colley, said that many comments had been made about the Chirk community spirit during the pandemic. Councillors unanimously agreed that a permanent symbol of recognition and thanks should be made.

“Chirk Town Council therefore dedicates the bench and plaque to the people of Chirk.”

He said it would commemorate those who had lost their lives and pay tribute to the key workers who helped see the town through the pandemic.

Councillor Gareth Baines said that the Community Bench and plaque had been unveiled in dedication to the extraordinary community spirit all residents and businesses in Chirk have shown throughout the pandemic.
