Rachael's Tri-umphant for charity in Ellesmere event
When Rachael Saunders set herself the challenge to run five kilometres, she never dreamt it would lead to her taking part in her first triathlon 18 months later.
Rachael, from Criftins, near Ellesmere, used the Shropshire Triathlon at Ellesmere earlier this month to raise money in memory of her sister.
And she says she was overwhelmed when her appeal raised £1,400.
"As a family we suffered the devastating loss of my vibrant, warm-hearted, beautiful sister, Rebecca, when she took her own life in August 2000. This heightened our awareness and concern about mental health issues which are often inperceivable in even the closest of families and friendships," she said.
"About 18 months ago I set myself a challenge to run 5k, having never been a runner, but having always enjoyed sport. I was also inspired by lots of people, locally, taking part in the couch to 5k program. I found it a great way to clear my head, reduce stress and improve self esteem.
"In October I decided to challenge myself further by signing up for a fun/super-sprint triathlon that I’d seen advertised as part of the Shropshire Triathlon in Ellesmere.
"Twenty years ago I had supported my partner Max at the same event, never dreaming I would ever attempt anything like it. I didn’t even have a road bike when I signed up for it and can still only swim breaststroke."
Rachael said fortunately she managed to persuade her friend Lesley to join her in the challenge.
"I really wanted to raise money for the charity Mind and contacted them only six weeks before the event. They were extremely helpful and supportive and sent me a fundraising pack.
"As the event got closer I was a mixture of extreme nerves and excitement. Crossing the finishing line was a wonderful feeling.
"I had received overwhelming support from family and friends not only in their encouragement and belief in me, but also in their kind and generous sponsorship. The final fundraising figure stands at a fabulous £1,400."
