John R Davies was the former managing director of the Ellesmere-based Lakeside Coaches, a business he started in 1979.

His family said Mr Davies, who was 82, died peacefully at his home in Ellesmere after a long illness.

His son Gareth said his father was very well known and respected.

“He was frequently referred to as a gentleman by many who encountered him over his long life,” he said.

The business now has depots in Malpas, Wem and Shrewsbury.

It achieved national recognition five years ago with the accolade of Route One 2016 Medium Coach Operator of the year.

Mr Davies was made a Freeman of Ellesmere in a ceremony in June 2017 for his services to the town and local area.

In 2013 he was made an Honorary Member of the Old Ellesmerian Alumni Society for Ellesmere College for his services to the school.
