The BPSO, widely regarded as one of the UK’s best national non-professional orchestras, will be performing in Shrewsbury Abbey on Saturday.

The British Police Symphony Orchestra was created over 25 years ago by members of police forces throughout the UK. Today, its players continue to be drawn from the ranks of either serving or retired police officers or police staff, or members of the wider policing family.

They come together to rehearse or to perform once a month in their own time and at the own expense and, in doing so, have helped to raise many thousands of pounds for a range of different charities across the UK.

All proceeds from ticket sales will go towards the work of West Mercia Police’s own charity, the Police Community Fund, which provides much needed practical support for vulnerable victims of crime.

The concert, which starts at 7.30pm, has been organised by the Shropshire Music Trust.

Director of Shropshire Music Trust, Kate Hogwood said: “Shrewsbury is fortunate to have been selected for one of their limited annual dates, and at 70-strong the event offers an all too infrequent and exciting opportunity to enjoy locally the thrill of such full-scale high quality musical forces in one of the county’s largest and most magnificent historic buildings.

"The BPSO’s programme celebrates the music of Spain through popular repertoire opening with the sublime Bolero by Ravel made famous by Torvill and Dean and concluding with his colourful Daphnis and Chloe Suite No.2, and ranging through Rimsky-Korsakov and Manual de Falla, in an evening full of Iberian flair and sunshine".

The programme, entitled “A Spanish Inspiration”, will include popular pieces such as Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol, Saint Saens’ Danse Macabre and Ravel’s Bolero.

Tickets are priced at £18 and, in order to attract younger members of the audience, are half price for 25s and under and only £1 each for 18s and under. They can be ordered from Windband on 01743 367482, Ticketsource on 0333 666 3366 or online via www.ticketsource.co.uk/smt
