Copthorne Ladies Club and other volunteers across the country donated wool and knitted squares to Oxon Knit and Natter who then got to work creating the blankets for Operation Sabre’s adopted Old Persons Home in Sighisoara, Transylvania.

Operation Sabre departs for Transylvania on next Wednesday following a traditional blessing carried out by The Very Reverend Jonathan Mitchell of Shrewsbury Cathedral. The 11-strong crew will also include firefighters from Germany and Austria who will be taking three fully equipped fire engines and over three tonnes of humanitarian aid to some of the most remote communities in Transylvania. Their mission will include further decorating activities at the old peoples home and aid for a home accommodating young mothers and their children.

One of the charity’s priorities is to promote the benefits of smoke alarms, as witnessed in the UK in recent decades.

During previous visits team members have installed donated smoke alarms in remote villages and care homes.

Alarms fitted in one such home recently operated having detected smoke from a residents discarded cigarette, a cigarette that led to a major fire breaking out. The home’s manager praised Operation Sabre for previously installing the alarms that saved 18 residents from what could have been fatal consequences.

Oxon knit and Natter meet at 1pm on Wednesdays at The Toby Carvery at Welshpool Road. All knitters and beginners are welcome at the Knit and Natter and young children can enjoy the use of the newly opened Fuzzy Ed’s.

Copthorne Ladies Club meet on a Monday evening at Gains Park Community Hall at 7pm and have a varied programme of events.
