Rare bird ruffles feathers
He has been ruffling feathers wherever he goes and now a local fisherman has netted himself a sighting of the rare Night Heron.
Local angler Anthony Lloyd was fishing in the Rea Valley Brook near Meole Brace when he saw the small grey and white bird. He recognised it after reading a story about the bird, which is usually seen in the warmer climes of the Mediterranean, in the Shropshire Star.
He was fly fishing for trout in the river on Friday afternoon when he spotted the bird with its distinctive white plume.
Anthony, 37, said: "I had seen about the bird which was spotted in the Dingle in Shrewsbury and recognised it straight away. I had read about it being seen in the Dingle and had seen the photo. That was what caught my eye. I quickly got out my phone and managed to get a picture of it. It was concentrating hard on the small fish and insects in the river."
It is unclear whether the bird is the same one as was seen in the Dingle two weeks ago. It had previously been seen in the Venus Pool at Cound and had attracted a number of twitchers. It then moved on to the pool in the Dingle in the Quarry.
Dozens of bird spotters came to take its photo and see the rarely spotted bird up close.
Members of Shropshire Wildlife Trust believe the bird ended up in Shropshire after being blown off course.
